Shine a Light on Love

It’s been a long, intense year. You and I have been through a lot. Most of us worked hard, went through extrem losses, some of them very unexpected, some others as answers to our heart prayers for our beloved ones and we have stretched & grown in so many ways (whether you can see this growth or not doesn’t matter). Simply living on Earth through the past year: You have grown.

And you if you are tired now and ready for some time out, well embrace the universal law of cause&effect, as that’s a very bio-logical response and result to all of this! So enjoy the process, relax and BE with it. It’s so important that you rest right now, to rejuvenate your weary spirit for the new year ahead.

There’s a very special invitation into stillness about the season we are entering, called winter. Even though everything appears dead & frozen in the outside world, a new cycle is beginning; it’s a solar new year. You can sense there is magic brewing deep down in the dark. Just like the spark of new life that appears deep in a mother’s womb, you can sense a quiet spark occurring within.

The term “solstice” comes from the Latin words sol (Sunsistere (to stand still) because, during the solstice, the angle between the Sun’s rays and the plane of the Earth’s equator (called declination) appears to stand still.

The ability to truly rest is a privilege: one that too many of us don’t have. Winter is asking you: can you lean into rest wherever you are able? Even if you don’t have the privilege of an abundance of restful time in your life, can you find small, simple places where you can embrace rest? Can resting receive just as much focus as your ‘to do’ list?

They are four major seasonal events of light impact on us in a year, also known as seasonal rhythm. For many people, the words equinox and solstice pop up and bring back memories of childhood science class. Some fancy terms for something that doesn’t affect your life, right? Wrong. They do.

Equinoxes and solstices mark the beginning of one of the four known season. The spring and autumn equinoxes mark the onset of their prospective season, whereas the summer and winter solstices correspond to theirs. Solstices are especially notable, as they mark the longest and shortest days of the year. In essence, they signify how life on Earth changes in connection to the Sun and how our seasons shape our world. Essentially, daylight hours (the period of time between sunrise and sunset each day) have been growing slightly shorter each day since the summer solstice last June, which is the longest day of the year (at least in terms of light). Many cultures, religions and spiritual traditions have honoured the winter solstice.

Often, this time of greatest darkness has encouraged humanity to gather amongst loved ones and celebrate the rebirth and return to the light. That is most notably found in many ancient religions and can be seen in festivals and holidays such as Christmas, which was originally based on Pagan traditions (not the birth of Jesus Christ, as many scholars will correctly point out). Feasts focusing upon gratitude and the offering of gifts have been celebrated for thousands of years. In fact, some are: Alban Arthan (Druidic), the Feast of Juul (Scandinavian), Dongzhi Winter Solstice Festival (Chinese) and Saturnalia (Roman). So, no, this isn’t a recent human development: You are a part of a long lineage of ancestors from all over the world who have celebrated at this same exact time.

Ever since last year’s Winter Solstice the Sun has grown: from birth, to its height at the Summer Solstice, then declined through autumn, until its light finally died on the darkest night. When, simultaneously, it is born again. And a new cycle of life for the Sun begins. At the Winter Solstice we celebrate the magnificent Sun: that on the darkest night it is born again, bringing a new year of life & growth with it. Winter solstice 2022 occurs this year on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 (@4:48 p.m. EST for the Northern Hemisphere), which represents Summer Solstice for the Southern Hemisphere. For this reason, it is also known as the December solstice. What a miracle, that on this shortest day, when it feels like we could just descend completely into darkness the Light returns with the birth of the Sun. With the birth of the Sun a new year begins. It’s the beginning of a new cycle of birth → growth → death in Nature; a whole new year of life, experiences & transformation: It’s a new chapter. Which makes this a really hopeful & exciting time. Anything is possible in the year that lies ahead. Anything can grow in your life. In a spiritual sense, no matter your tradition, this is an ideal time to embrace your inner self and a perfect time for reflection, introspection and intention setting. Honour your stillness. Understanding one’s emotions, motivations and desires are crucial in order to manifest the life you wish to live: It’s a time of pure potential. The Winter Solstice is the shortest day, but it’s also the moment the Sun begins to grow again. The light of a brand new year is being lit, deep within the darkness. And the same thing is happening in you. The dreams you are dreaming in winter are the sparks of new life that will grow in the year ahead.
